Argentina stunned as Saudi Arabia win 2-1: The FIFA World Cup saw a huge upset today as 51st-ranked Saudi Arabia beat third-ranked Argentina 2-1. Before the start of the World Cup, Argentina was considered to be a strong contender for the title, but after being the victim of this big upset in the very first match, the team has suffered a big blow.
In this match against Saudi Arabia, captain Lionel Messi was able to give the team an early lead by scoring a goal in the 10th minute, but in the second half, the opposition team counterattacked which Argentina could not withstand. Messi’s team was leading 1-0 till the first half. But in the second half, Saleh Alsehri scored a goal in the 48th minute to snatch the lead from Argentina and after that Salem Aldawsari scored in the 53rd minute to start the dominance of Argentina. After this, Argentina kept trying to score continuously but could not succeed.
With this humiliating defeat from Saudi Arabia, Argentina’s winning streak of 36 matches has also been broken. During this, Argentina had won 25 matches, while 11 matches were drawn.
Saudi Arabia became the first team since 1974 to score two goals in a FIFA World Cup opener against Argentina. The last time in 1974, Poland defeated them 3-2. This is only the third victory of Saudi Arabia in the history of the World Cup. After this victory against Argentina, their confidence will increase further.
Argentina’s next matches are against Mexico on 27 November and Poland on 30 November. To reach the pre-quarterfinals, they will now have to win both their remaining matches.
