Asian Cup Table Tennis 2022: Indian paddler Manika Batra on Friday became the first Indian woman to reach the semi-finals of the Asia Cup table tennis tournament with big victories over Chinese Taipei and world No. 23 Chen Hsu Yu here. World number 44 Manika defeated Chen 4-3 (6-11, 11-6, 11-5, 11-7, 8-11, 9-11, 11-9) in the women’s singles quarterfinals.
Manika’s work continues
Earlier, the 27-year-old Indian had defeated world number seven Chen Jingtong of China in their round of 16 match on Thursday. She will face the winner of the match between Korea’s Jeon Jihee and Japan’s Mima Ito in the semi-finals.
Recent results haven’t been kind to Batra, who hasn’t had a good time in 2022 due to some off-the-field and on-court performances as well. At the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham, she failed to win a single medal from her four medals won at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
Paddler made a great comeback
Leading the team in the World Team event in October, Manika lost both her matches in India’s 2–3 defeat to Germany in the first encounter. But they won the remaining two group matches as the women’s team qualified for the knockouts after finishing 17th last season. Earlier this month, Manika won a mixed doubles silver medal with partner G Sathiyan at the WTT Contender Nova Gorica in Slovenia, taking her to the world’s highest No. 5 spot in the mixed doubles charts.
