New Delhi. Indian players have performed at their best whenever the Commonwealth Games were held on British soil and are expected to make it to the Games in Birmingham starting July 28, despite the exclusion of the sport of shooting. Will set new records. India has so far participated in the Commonwealth Games on British soil five times and has achieved better results than its previous performances every time except in Glasgow 2014.
India took part in the Commonwealth Games for the first time in 1934, which were held in London. India then participated in only two sports, athletics and wrestling. Wrestler Rashid Anwar gave India its first medal of these Games by winning the bronze medal in 74 kg. India was successful in winning two gold medals for the first time in the 1958 Games in Cardiff, Wales. The gold medals were given to India by Udan Sikh Milkha Singh and wrestler Leela Ram. Wrestler Laxmi Kant Pandey won the silver medal. India had not won a medal before in Sydney (1938) and Vancouver (1954).
After this, the Commonwealth Games were organized in Britain in 1970 in Edinburgh, Scotland, in which India won 12 medals. These include five gold medals. India won all its five gold and all three silver medals in wrestling. From India, then wrestlers Ved Prakash, Sudesh Kumar, Uday Chand, Mukhtiar Singh and Harishchandra Birajdar won the gold medals.
In 1986, the Commonwealth Games were organized in Edinburgh itself, in which India did not participate. After this, the Commonwealth Games were played on British soil in Manchester in 2002 and India then gave its best performance till that time. In Manchester 2002, India was successful in winning a total of 69 medals including 30 gold medals. India then finished fourth behind Australia, hosts England and Canada.
India won 14 gold medals in shooting in Manchester but the sport has not been included in Birmingham 2022, which will hurt India the most. In Manchester itself, the Indian women’s hockey team created history by winning the gold medal by defeating England 3-2 in the final. India first hosted the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in 2010, winning 101 medals, including 38 gold medals, but failed to replicate the performance at the Glasgow Games four years later.
In Glasgow 2014, India had won 64 medals including 15 gold medals and finished fifth. India then won five gold medals in wrestling, four in shooting, three in weightlifting and one each in badminton, athletics and squash. The Commonwealth Games are starting from 28 July in Birmingham. In this, a total of 215 players from India will participate in 141 events of 19 sports.
