In the Commonwealth Games held in Birmingham, India ended its campaign in these Games by winning a total of 61 medals with 22 gold, 16 silver and 23 bronze medals. In many sports like wrestling, table tennis, weightlifting, it was already certain that Indian athletes would show good stamina and India would definitely get a medal in these. But in some games, Indian athletes have created history by winning medals for the first time. One such game is Lawn Balls, in which the Women’s Lawn Balls team won the gold medal.
When the Indian women’s lawn balls team won the final of the women’s force (four-player team) event, some were surprised and many were delighted. Surprised because India had not had much success in this game before and happy were the athletes who had nothing left to lose. This is because the players who have won medals in lawn balls have told about their journey before winning the gold medal, after hearing which you will salute their courage.
The Indian women’s force team of Lovely Choubey (Lead), Pinky (Second), Nayanmoni Sekia (3rd) and Roopa Rani Tirkey (Skip) beat South Africa 17-10 in the gold medal bout.
Lovely Choubey and Roopa Rani Tirkey during a talk show spoke about how they struggled to make it to the game. People even said that the selection was done after seeing our face. We have had to hear so much that it is difficult to put into words.
“We were very depressed. There was a lot of talk about us. It was very demoralizing.” Saying this Roopa Rani Tirkey started crying. She mustered up enough courage to keep her word.
He added, “There was a lot of pressure on us. If we don’t return from the Games with a medal, maybe there would be no future of Lawn Bowl for us in the next edition.” It is known that the selection in the team has been done after seeing our face.
