FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2023 Draw India placed alongside England Spain and Wales in Pool D

The International Hockey Federation (FIH) on Thursday declared the draw for the Hockey Men’s World Cup 2023 to be held in Odisha. FIH has placed India in Pool D along with England, Spain and Wales. The 16-team tournament was drawn on Thursday. The team is divided into four pools and each pool will have four teams. The World Cup will be held from January 13 to 29. During the draw, India, Australia, Belgium and the Netherlands were ranked first in their respective pools based on their FIH World Rankings on June 1.

World number five India is the top ranked team in Pool D. In the pool, India will take on number six England, two-time silver medalist Spain and Wales. Spain is ranked eighth in the world while Wales is ranked 16th. Wales team is playing in the World Cup for the first time.

Defending champions Belgium have been placed in Pool B along with Germany, Korea and Japan. Apart from this, Australia, Argentina, France and South Africa have been included in Pool-A, while Netherlands, New Zealand, Malaysia and Chile have been included in Pool-C. The FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup will be held in Bhubaneswar and Rourkela, Odisha from January 13, 2023.

India, ranked fifth in the world, is the highest ranked team in the group. A place in the quarter-finals will not be easy for the hosts despite being ranked highest in their group. India’s team is very strong. But the team is playing in home conditions, so they are expected to play well at home.

Games between India and England are often high-scoring, with England having an advantage in most major events. The winners of the group stage will advance directly to the quarter-finals, while the other teams placed second and third will play crossover matches to decide their future.
