Almost putting an end to uncertainty over the hosting of next year’s Men’s World Cup, the International Hockey Federation (FIH) and the Committee of Administrators have decided to hold Hockey India’s elections before October 9 and submit the final draft of the amended constitution in the next ten days. has agreed. The FIH delegation described the meeting with top officials of the COA, the Sports Ministry and the World Cup host Odisha government as fruitful. The FIH team included Acting President Saif Ahmed and CEO Thierry Weil.
In a statement issued here after the meeting, the FIH said, “The COA responded to two important issues raised by the FIH in the meeting. The first draft of the amended Constitution of Hockey India was submitted to the FIH today. With this, the final draft will be submitted in the next ten days. It further said, “With this, the decision to hold the Hockey India elections before October 9, 2022 was taken by mutual consent.”
Regarding the decision of the Delhi High Court in the Hockey India case, Ahmed said, “We do not consider the court to be a third party and we respect the judiciary. We believe that the court’s decision is not intrusive. CoA member Anil Dave said, “The interaction with the FIH team was very positive. Keeping in mind the spirit of the game and the interests of the players, it was agreed to take some important steps for the smooth operation of hockey in India.
Hockey World Cup to be played on these dates next year
Earlier yesterday, the FIH team also met Sports Secretary Sujata Chaturvedi. Odisha Sports Secretary cum Commissioner Vinil Krishna apprised the FIH team about the preparations for the 2023 Men’s Hockey World Cup to be held in Bhubaneswar and Rourkela. The FIH and COA teams will visit Bhubaneswar and Rourkela on 7 September followed by the official World Cup draw in Bhubaneswar a day later. The World Cup will be played from 13 to 29 January 2023.
India’s hosting was in danger
The FIH had last month sought from the CoA a series of details regarding the implementation of the amended constitution and the conduct of fresh elections for Hockey India. There was an apprehension that if Hockey India does not immediately implement the constitution as per the sports code, then India may lose the hosting of the World Cup to be held from January 13 to 29.
