New-deadlier COVID 19 variant-Lambda-detected in more than 30 countries
While the world continue to struggle with the upsurge in the COVID-19 infections, mainly associated to the delta variant of the SARS COV-2another variant, Lambda is also knocking at the doors, considered as the newest variant to be on the lookout for.
The Lambda variantscientifically known as C.37 is now a potential emerging threat, having been detected in over 30 nations so far.
The World Health Organization has recently declared the C.37 mutation of the SARS-COV-2 virus to be a new variant which could be a potential factor of caseloads. The variant, known as Lambda, was first recognized o June 14, after being detected in over 25 countries worldwide. It was first observed in Perusoon spreading across in South America,
The Lambda variant has also been detected in parts of the UK and some European countries, which are currently battling sudden outbreaks caused by delta variant,
The WHO and many health experts have continued to issue warning advisories about the high infectiousness and transmissibility of the Lambda variant of SARS-COV-2, However, it is not yet established as the variant of concern.
The UK Health Ministry tweeted, “The Lambda strain was reported to have originated from Peru, the country with the highest mortality rate in the world”, reported The Star.
Lambda accounts for nearly 82 percent of the coronavirus case samples reported during May and June in Peru, Euro News reported citing the Pan American Health Organization(PAHO),
Recently, Public Health England in the UK reported a handful of cases caused by Lambda detected in the country and recognized it as having “a potential increased transmissibility or possible increased resistance to neutralizing antibodies”,
As per scientific research, the Lambda variant carries at least 7 mutations in its spike proteins, which make it lethal and cause heightened transmissibility. While the delta variant has only three mutations. Studies suggest that the Lambda variant carries greater infectivity rates, much more than the Alpha and Gamma variants of the virus.
While genomic testing and scientific research continue to happen, it is being suspected that the Lambda variant has heavy mutations which allow for easier infectivity and could possibly also allow it to evade vaccine-driven antibodies.
However, there are little evidences to support the risks and the repercussions of the Lambda variant associated to vaccine-driven immunity.
While the Europe is still fighting the delta plus variant, which was first detected in India, there are no cases of Lambda variant being reported in India so far.
