The French Dispatch Cast at the Cannes is now a favorite meme material on Internet
After being canceled last year due to the pandemic, the 2021 Cannes Film Festival has been taking place over the last week. A bunch of new movies have had their debut at the ravishing event on the French Riviera, where a jury led by Spike Lee will choose the winners.
Among all the latest films, ‘The French Dispatch’, which received a nine-minute standing ovation from the audience at the Cannesis certainly creating a buzz on social media for its viral picture of the cast featuring Timothee Chalamet, Tilda Swinton, Wes Anderson, and Bill Murraywho will be playing lead roles in the upcoming movie.
The movie also features a star-studded cast that includes Owen Wilson, Benicio Del Toro, and Frances McDormand.
The photo’s meme potential was definitely helped by the fact each of them was wearing an outfit that spoke to their personalities: Murray as the veteran slacker, Anderson as the intellectual dandy, Chalamet as the young hipster and Swinton as the space queen from the future sent back in time to save humanity.
So, the internet did what it does best and turned the clashing styles into a new meme. The wildly popular meme format compares the four different styles to another set of four things. People were quick to bring in the generational comparison in the picture.
The film is an anthology of three whimsical short stories set in France in the mid-20th Century. The conceit is that they were all published in an English-language magazine which is edited in the punningly-named fictional French city of Ennui-Sur-Blasé, but which is attached to an American newspaper based in Kansas. First, we meet the dedicated, eccentric editor, played by Bill Murray, and staff members played by Elisabeth Moss and Jason Schwartzman (one of three writers who helped Anderson with the plotting). Then we are given a guided tour of the city by a cycling, beret-wearing Owen Wilson. And then the three main stories begin.
