Mirabai Chanu Jeremy Lalrinnunga To Skip Asian Weightlifting Championships to have strength and conditioning camp in US for World Meet

Olympic silver medalist Mirabai Chanu and seven other top Indian lifters will leave for the US on Tuesday to attend a three-and-a-half-week strength and adaptation training camp in St. Louis. Chanu will be accompanied by 2022 Commonwealth Games medalists Jeremy Lalrinnunga, Achinta Sheuli, Sanket Sargar, Bindiyarani Devi, Gurdeep Singh and 2018 Commonwealth Games champion RV Rahul and Asian Championships gold medalist Jhili Dalbehera in St. Louis. Weightlifting coach Vijay Sharma told PTI, “We will be in America for 23-24 days. It is off session so we will participate in the strength program there.

Sargar, who underwent surgery due to an elbow injury during the Commonwealth Games, will take part in rehabilitation. “All these lifters have minor injuries like Gurdeep’s wrist injury. Sanket will take part in rehabilitation. We want everyone to be fully fit for the World Championships.

India Lifters will work with Dr. Aaron Horshig, a former weightlifter and now a physical therapist and strength and adaptation coach. Chanu has been consulting Horshig since 2020. He was instrumental in resolving Chanu’s balance problem which was affecting his snatch technique. He took part in a month-long training camp with Horschig in March ahead of the Commonwealth Games.

“Meera has no problem right now but if we are going there, she will also take part in strength training,” Sharma said. The senior lifter will not be participating in this year’s Asian Championships. They have instead decided to focus on the World Championships which is the qualifying event for the Paris Olympics.

The Asian Championships is to be held in Manama, Bahrain from October 6 to 16. India will field its ‘B’ team which will consist of junior lifters. “The lifters who have returned from the Commonwealth Games will not compete in the Asian Championships. We will send our ‘B’ team.

The head coach said, “The focus is on the World Championships, which is a qualifying event for the Paris Olympics.” The Indian weightlifting team won 10 medals, including three gold and as many silver, at the Commonwealth Games earlier this month. Sharma was happy with the performance of his lifters in the Commonwealth Games but the head coach lamented the missed opportunities. “It could have been better,” he said. Gold medal contender Ajay (Singh) missed out on a medal. Sanket too missed the gold and Poonam too.
