Selectors will lose their sweat in selecting the Indian team for the Asia Cup. Selectors will sweat in selecting the Indian team for the Asia Cup

Digital Desk, New Delhi. India’s T20 series against West Indies is set to end on Sunday. Thereafter, the selection committee is expected to announce the squad for the Asia Cup 2022. Finalizing the squad for the ICC T20 World Cup in Australia in October will not be easy. However, the Asia Cup is followed by a three-match home T20I series against Australia and South Africa respectively in September. It is likely that the team will be the one who will go for the T20 World Cup.

Captain Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant and Dinesh Karthik are almost firm in the batting department. With Virat Kohli and KL Rahul back in the squad for the Asia Cup, it should round out the batting order. Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja are undoubtedly all-rounders. Yuzvendra Chahal, Ravichandran Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar are involved in the bowling department. If Harshal Patel is fit after recovering from injury, then he is sure to be confirmed too.

With the above 13 players fixed, the focus shifts to who can be the players to complete a team of fifteen. Deepak Hooda and Ishan Kishan have an edge over Sanju Samson and Shreyas Iyer in terms of challengers or potential backup options in the batting department. In terms of fast bowling options, pacer Arshdeep Singh has created a big opportunity for himself with impressive performances in the opportunities he has got, ahead of another youngster in Avesh Khan. With his ability to bowl yorkers in the death overs and show finesse against the batsmen, Arshdeep is definitely in the running.

But Deepak Chahar, who is back in the ODI squad for the series against Zimbabwe, could compete with Arshdeep as a fast bowling back-up slot. Chahar was India’s best bowling option in the powerplays before being sidelined due to injuries. With Bhuvneshwar doing well now, Chahar may get a slight edge over Arshdeep due to his batting abilities, especially his willingness to hit sixes.

Axar Patel, Ravi Bishnoi and Kuldeep Yadav are the contenders in spin. But with Axar, Jadeja and Kuldeep having similar options as well as Bishnoi, the selection of any one of the three would indicate what the Indian selectors are thinking of as back-up options.
